TINKERBALLERINAS & TOUGH BOYS DANCE
We are the Under 5s branch of Torquay Dance Academy catering to the youngest dancers in our community. What TInkerballerinas & ToughBoysDance really want to share with our little dancers is the pure joy of dance- how wonderful it is to dance to classical music. Our aim is to strengthen the mind/body connection through softly teaching the principles of classical ballet. We use a lot of props and imaginative storytelling through class so we can gently teach the fundamentals like plies, port de bras and pirouettes while having fun. This prepares them beautifully for when we start teaching them their technical classes at the age of 5.
“Kids: they dance before they learn there is anything that isn't music”
― William Edgar Stafford
Being a mum herself, principal Kim Fraser saw her own children loving dance from before they could walk but also didn’t want to have to travel long distances with small children to access programs. The classes are family friendly with siblings, babies, grandparents and friends welcome to watch the class.
We run classes on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings in Torquay at our main studio at 8 Winki Way, Torquay (just up from Aldi). We offer Thursday mornings in Armstrong Creek/Warralily- please contact us for location information.
We advise Mums and Dads to bring their dancers along for a free trial lesson just to make sure it's something they enjoy before committing to the term. Some dancers are a little bit overwhelmed at first and take a little while to warm up and some of my shyer students still get shy after six weeks. We use a lot of props and imagination to engage them and bring the joy of classical music and dance to them in a fun way. It's not like an old school dance class with a strict mistress and strict rules (weI save that for when they're teenagers). They still get the fundamentals of classical ballet but most importantly we aim to inspire their love for dance.
Parents, carers and families (newborns and toddlers) are welcome in the class each week to watch and enjoy the class. Children who have not paid for the class are asked to stay seated with their parents except for story-time.
1.5-3yo Classes traditionally require a parent/carer involvement for them to mimic and copy directly. As classes progress sometimes the little dancers are happy to dance by themselves and have learnt to copy TInkerballerina. If this happens please always be on stand-by to jump in and assist them if they are having trouble. At this age they are different each week so even though they may not need you one week, they may the next and vice-versa. An adult carer must always be present for each class and is part of condition for taking part in class.
3-4yo Classes do not require parent/carer involvement and adults watch from the sides. Our little dancers sometimes will come and join their parent/carer but please try to turn it into a quick ‘drink break’ for them. Some weeks however, our dancers may be feeling shy and watching and returning in their own time may be the most helpful approach. An adult carer must always be present for each class and is part of condition for taking part in class.
4-5yo Classes do not require parent/carer involvement and adults watch from the side. Children of this age respond very well to teacher guided classes without distraction. If you have concerns about your dancer feeling nervous in this environment please talk with us about options. . An adult carer must always be present for each class and is part of condition for taking part in class.
FIRST TIME DANCERS
The first class of anything new can be daunting for all of us and some little dancers (and big dancers) like to just watch from the comfort of the parent/carers’ lap. This is common and usually the second week when they know what to expect they will join in the class with little hesitation.
